John Mecom showed up for the Nassau Speed Week in 1964 with his impressive stable of matching blue and white striped race cars. The most imposing of the group was Grand Sport chassis # 3, wearing the audacious double-zero. Mecom was hoping to repeat his 1963 success. Stock car driver Jack Saunders put Mecom's blue Grand Sport Coupe on the front row for the main event: the 250-mile Nassau Trophy Race.
He even out-dragged Roger Penske into the first corner and under the bridge, running neck-and-neck with Ken Miles' experimental 390 ci aluminum block Cobra! Eventually Penske got by Saunders and won, but the young Californian had shown his meddle with a 3rd place. During the 3 race event the car was also driven by Foyt and Thompson. This car later was changed to #2 for Sebring 12 and AJ Foyt gave it a great record ride passing 50 cars on the first lap. He started 62 because of mechanical problems during qualifying. Please check photos as they are part of the description. Your Satisfaction is our Goal.....
